I've been MIA this weekend. My apologies. First it was an impromptu rest day, then I got busy, I got sick, I told my illness to buzz off, it slapped me in the face, I submitted, and that's just about been my fun-filled weekend. Yay!!
Ok, ok. There's a bit more to it than that. Here's the longer version...
Friday
I woke up Friday and headed straight to the gym. I did a half hour on the bike (9.55 miles) and then jumped in the pool to test out my new swim equipment (3500 yards = 1.99 miles). I'll review everything in full later, but overall I am quite happy the new toys. I was a good morning! That night I ended up at a comedy club with some friends to see a hypnotist, J Medicine Hat. It was a late night, but it was a very fun night out (something I don't have that often).
Saturday
I woke up Saturday and "Ooo... I don't feel so good." I got my Nth visit from the common cold this season! Sometimes I have this nagging feeling that I have a subconscious death wish and it's going to come in the form of some incredibly common, easily treatable virus that takes over my body after I utterly obliterate my immune system with my training schedule. Due to all of this, I took Saturday as another rest day (two in one week, I'm losing it!). I stocked up again with Mott's apple juice and relaxed all day reading 50/50. In the book, Dean talks about how he had overcome multiple head colds during his 50 days of marathoning and that mild exercise is perfectly fine. So obviously I took that to heart (an extreme athlete told me it's ok to do what I like while sick, I'm gonna' listen!). So...
Sunday
...on Sunday I did just that. Sunday morning I went to yoga class. Not only that, but afterwards, I took a ride with Chelsea to her Aunt's home. Chelsea's aunt was a world class marathoner back in the 80's and quite the running enthusiast. She has been helping Chelsea train for the NYC half marathon and agreed to help me with a few tips. Despite the rain, we went out and ran up and down the street while her aunt yelled out instructions and snapped photos. I'll detail out what I learned later this week, but overall I am wasting a lot of energy in my upper body and it is hard to notice because all of it is being taken care of by my super quads! (That's right TMB, you have a challenger!, haha)
I got back after running in the rain, got warm, had some juice, some soup, relaxed, and SLAP! Mr. (or Ms/Mrs) Cold hits me again and I'm read for sleep.
One thing I learned this weekend is that my training schedule needs to be completely revamped. So as of tomorrow, I am starting again from the group up (except for swimming) and rebuilding my schedule from now until at least June. I have a few new rules and guidelines to stick to that will hopefully help me avoid speed bumps like the shin splints and constant colds.
Questions:
1. What were you up to this weekend?
I know I have a lot of blogs to catch up on (I promise I will), but until then what did you do these past three days?
2. Do you ever get repetitive colds during your training season?
I seem to have a knack for running my body/immune system into the ground! Am I the only one?
Stay fit. Stay healthy.

Ah sorry you are sick...that sucks!
for me: above the chest is ok to run, once it gets in the lungs: big no no. I do get repetitive head colds...sinus congestion.
This weekend: race today!
Are your colds, just a 'runny nose'? I know that frequently when I start ramping up my training, my body gets low on zinc, and I start getting the sniffles continuously. I get more zinc in my body and I feel much better. Something to think about.
Boo for illness!
I would really like to see a picture of these "challengers" you speak of ...
Hope you're feeling better!
I hope you feel better soon. I used to get sick every 2-3 months or so, but then I started taking a multivitamin and now I only get really sick twice a year. I'm still waiting for my winter cold, but I know it will come and it will hit me hard.
Ugh...the cold that has been going around this year is just relentless! I think I've been hit by it 4 times already this year! I hope you feel better soon!
Sorry your sick! Hopefully by now you're feeling better!
Comedy club sounds fun!
Ryan's last name is MOTT so I end up with a lot of apple juice and applesauce in our grocery cart. :) If we get married I'm going to try to tap into the family fortune. haha (even though they're not related)
Last year I had quite a few and I think it was my diet as well. I try to eat healthier now. ALso I do work in Family Practice where I can catch everything in sight! I haven't this year with a little help from Vit C and ZInc Supplementation!!
